Hello dear friends!
If you’ve ever seen me out and about with my little (okay, not so little) pill organizer case, you probably already know about my fondness for supplements. Well, alright…maybe not a fondness, as much as an understanding that these things are really helpful, especially when dealing with a chronic health issue, or even just living in this modern world. Because, let’s face it- our current society is not one that promotes wellness, so we have to do all that we can to stay as healthy as possible. Our air and water quality aren’t what they used to be, our food supply is a mess (for a variety of reasons), and we’re surrounded by artificial lights and EMFs all day long. In my opinion, even if you’re not struggling with an illness, supplements are a really helpful part of an overall nutritional strategy.
Yes, whole foods should always form the foundation, but it’s perfectly alright to add in some additional help with high-quality compounds that you may not be getting enough of otherwise. Over the years, I have tried dozens (maybe even hundreds) of different supplements to help me heal my Lyme/CFS, and a handful have survived the experimental phase, and earned a spot in my daily routine.
Since supplementation is hands down one of the top questions that I get from my coaching clients, I thought I’d write up a little blog about some of my favorites!
So, without further ado, here are some of the best supplements that I have tried this year:
Trust me, this one earns the fancy title. I was taking plain ol’ fish oil for a while, but it was really hard to find one that didn’t make me break out or make my hair really greasy. I had heard of this brand before (it’s quite popular in the primal health circles), so I just went for it and ordered a bottle. Holy smokes, this stuff is amazing. It seems to help with my joint pain and brain fog, and doesn’t give me any nasty, smelly side effects. Plus, it really seems to help with my digestion- goodbye bloating!
Just a couple of weeks ago, I was in my local health food store, doing some muscle testing on various sleep/relaxation supplements, and this one resonated SO strongly with my energy, I had to get it. I know this is an awesome company (support your local small businesses!) and they make high-quality stuff, so it wasn’t a hard sell. I take a few pumps in the evening before bed, and I feel nice and chill. I’ve been sleeping better and I plan to pick up another bottle, so I don’t run out!
While I do occasionally indulge in some coffee, most mornings I drink tea, and this is my go-to. I’ve tried SO many teas, and many of them just didn’t give me the boost I need, without the bitterness (read: added sweeteners). But hallelujah for Yogi’s vanilla spice! I love the taste of this one- no additives needed, and I often drink two cups on busy days. There is some caffeine, but it’s balanced with herbs I love like ashwagandha, gotu kola, and shatavari, plus L-theanine. I buy it by the case, it’s that good.
I know I’ve raved about this one before, particularly for its ability to relieve pain, so it definitely deserves a place on this list. I take this CBD oil several times a week, for joint/muscle pain, headaches, menstrual cramps, and anxiety too. Cannabis is such an incredible medicine, and while it’s not legal everywhere (what is everyone waiting for?), this oil is available across the whole country, since it doesn’t contain any THC. It’s super potent stuff, so a little goes a long way. One bottle lasts me several months.
Oh, the liver- an organ we all take for granted. But man oh man, it performs such important functions, that I think it’s a good idea to give it some love now and then. Particularly for anyone who takes prescription medications, eats a high-fat diet, or is dealing with a chronic infection, cleansing the liver is crucial. Also, when you’re trying to kill off some bugs, or detox from heavy metals! I’ve been taking this for a few weeks now, in preparation for my mercury filling removal (I’ll blog about that next month!), and I feel good knowing I’m helping my liver do its job. Gaia makes high-quality products, and I’m happy to endorse them!
You probably have heard about turmeric’s health benefits by now, but maybe you’re struggling to find a good way to incorporate it into your supplement regimen? I’m a huge fan of making “golden milk” (aka turmeric tea), especially on high-pain days, but sometimes I just don’t feel like mixing up all the ingredients. This pre-made blend is my go-to when I need some extra anti-inflammatory assistance, and it tastes super yummy too! Just mix with warm coconut milk and sip. It’s especially nice on cold, wintry mornings.
If you deal with insomnia, muscle pain, or an overactive nervous system, magnesium deserves to be your BFF. Most of us are deficient in magnesium, which is actually one reason you may have chocolate cravings (fun facts!). This vital mineral is essential in helping us calm down and get relaxed, along with improving digestion, relieving pain, and balancing the body’s overall electrolytes. This fizzy powder tastes delicious, and I mix up a small glass every night before bed, but you can take it anytime you need it!
