Hello dear friends!
I have just been digging so hard on sandalwood oil lately, that I decided to make it the next essential oil spotlight blog. How much do I love this oil, you may ask? Well, let’s just say that I’ve already gone through a 5ml bottle of it in just over a week. Granted, I was blending lots of custom goodies for customers and myself (it’s even the base of my own personal perfume), so I had a funny feeling it wouldn’t last long. Sigh. Ordering more right now.
Sandalwood is a very popular scent, and has been for centuries. It’s warm, sweet, soft, and woodsy. It brings me into a calm, meditative, and creative state almost immediately. I have sandalwood candles, incense sticks, body lotion, perfume, and a spray that I mist over my yoga mat before I practice. Let’s just say, this is a truly magical oil, especially for shifting your state of mind.
The oil is steam-distilled from the meaty heartwood of mature Santalum album trees, and is relatively expensive to harvest and bottle for sale. For this reason, many of the cheaper oils you see on the market today have been blended with a “filler” oil to keep the costs down- usually from a different species of tree. A bottle of pure Indian sandalwood oil is harder to come by, and will set you back a pretty penny. Luckily, the oil is potent and a little bit goes a long way!
So let’s take a look at some of this gorgeous oil’s powers:
· Emollient (softening and soothing to skin)
· Heals scar tissue
· Lowers blood pressure
· Grounding and centering
· Soothes GI upset
· Enhances creativity
· Deepens spiritual connection
Indian sandalwood has a rich history of sacred and spiritual use, and is considered one of the most prized oils in the world for that reason. In Ayurvedic tradition, it was used to treat mental disorders because of its incredible calming and centering effects, and was always kept in the cabinets of the South Asian elite. It has long been used to treat sexual dysfunction and enhance tantric practices, and is associated with the sacral and root chakras.
Today, sandalwood can be used for a variety of purposes, only some of which include:
· Soothing irritated skin
· Conditioning dry or brittle hair
· Deepening meditative experiences
· Fading scars
· Preventing wrinkles
· Getting “in the mood”
· Deodorizing your pits and bits
· Calming down at the end of the day
· Preventing panic attacks
· Personal perfume
· Relieve dry or chapped skin/lips
Sandalwood is considered one of most non-irritating oils, and is generally safe to put anywhere on your body. But like all essential oils, it’s best to dilute it first, not only to reduce the risk of irritation, but also to save yourself some money. While I absolutely adore this oil, I’m learning to use a moderate hand when using it, which has been hard since I just can’t get enough of it! First world problems, I know…
If you are curious about trying this sacred oil, but you’re not sure about how you’d use it, here are just a few ideas to get you started:
· Add a few drops to a warm bath
· Mix with your favorite face cream
· Place a few drops in your diffuser for sexy time
· Blend into a massage oil
· Mix a few drops into your hair conditioner
· Combine with other scents and carrier oil for your own perfume
· Rub into scar tissue, along with frankincense oil
· Add a few drops to your face serum or argan oil
· Incorporate it into homemade deodorant
· Use it to make homemade body wipes
· Place a drop on your dog’s collar (but not your cat’s!)
· Blend with lavender and cedarwood for a pillow spray
· Mist a sandalwood solution on your yoga mat or meditation pillow
· Open the bottle and inhale multiple times per day (my favorite)
When you are trying to reconnect with your sexuality or spirituality, I would highly recommend investing in a bottle of sandalwood. It will both awaken and calm you, ushering you into an alive state and open both body and mind. Which I think we all could use a little more of these days, don’t you?
And of course, if you are planning to ever use this oil internally, be sure to buy from a reputable supplier who only sells 100% pure therapeutic grade oils and stands behind the internal usage of their oils!
I’m starting to use this oil more in my custom blends, so if you want to take advantage of the chance to have your very own special perfume or diffuser blend created, come check it out.
