Adventures In Healing: Megan Reclaims Her Life After Years Of Disabling Symptoms

Hello dear friends!

Welcome to the second installment of my new blog series, where we get to connect with other people who are healing their chronic conditions naturally! My goal with these blog interviews, is to share success stories of real individuals who are finding freedom from health challenges, so more people can get the hope and encouragement they need to keep going. Healing naturally isn’t always easy, and it can be nice to see that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.

This incredible human, Megan, is part of the Instagram Medical Medium community, and she agreed to share her story with us. So, let’s dive right in!

What symptoms, dis-eases, or diagnoses have you healed, or are currently healing?

Since adopting the Medical Medium lifestyle approximately 2 years ago, after over a decade of progressive chronic illness and serious health decline, I am healing all of the following diagnoses and symptoms:

Lyme disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, fibromyalgia, POTS, 80% loss of use of the left side of my body, IBS, SIBO, colitis, severe insomnia, depression, anxiety, MCS, MCAS, IC and bladder issues, hypo and hyperthyroid, severe headaches and migraines, brain swelling, brain fog, memory loss, adrenal fatigue, chest tightness, shortness of breath/difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, heart palpitations, extreme spinal and leg nerve pain, restless legs, tremors, muscular weakness and rigidity, unable to stand for more than 5 min, unable to exercise, extreme exhaustion, acute rapid weight loss, trigeminal neuralgia, frozen shoulder, chronic sciatica, ear pain and tinnitus, random brain and body electrical zaps, MTHFR issues, light headedness, tunnel vision, massive mood swings, PTSD, nausea, uncontrollable chills and sweats, kidney pain, high cholesterol, severe PMS, lichen planus, hypoglycemia, and reproductive organ pain. It's literally everything but the kitchen sink, but it's all getting so much better.

Tell us a little bit about your health journey.

I was born with jaundice, colic, and "baby liver," which means my body was already burdened by high levels of inherited viruses, toxins and toxic heavy metals at birth. I suffered chronic constipation and food sensitivities through my entire childhood, that only worsened as an adult. I also grew up in a very stressful environment, shuttling thousands of miles between two households, and suffering severe mental and emotional trauma via my narcissistic mother. My outlet was pushing myself vigorously in athletics, where I earned many accolades, including a full college athletic scholarship. However, as a young adult I quickly began experiencing more health issues: mono, depression, anxiety, more gut issues, first shingles symptoms, severe food poisoning, and insomnia.

During my first year of grad school my dad died suddenly of a heart attack; my entire world came crashing down, and I barely made it through to graduation to earn my doctorate. My health turned dramatically worse: I developed strange and disabling neurological symptoms like brain fog, intense headaches, memory loss, trouble speaking, extreme fatigue, massive anxiety and depression, severe insomnia and the left side of my body all but shut down, with unexplainable weakness and pain. I had constant gut pain, often doubled over, and increasingly reacted adversely to every food. All my exercise and athletic pursuits came to a halt. I was desperate to heal, and over the next 10 years, I saw more than 35 different conventional and alternative practitioners, accumulated dozens of diagnoses, and took thousands of pills. I was told “Lyme” was the answer, so I went down that rabbit hole for 5 years: continuous antibiotics, anti-malarials, anti-fungals, sleep meds, anti-depressants, anti-psychotics- several of which landed me in the ER and nearly killed me.

I felt like a lab rat in a demonic experiment, and was constantly dismissed and ridiculed because of the invisibility of my symptoms. I saw functional nutritionists, tried all varieties of diets, took hoards of supplements, yet kept getting worse. Still, I pushed through with everything I had until I was completely incapacitated, an empty shell of myself. It was such a dark time: I had tried so many treatments, I had no answers, spent my life savings on doctors, had to quit my promising career, could hardly eat and was very underweight, could barely sleep- often going a week without sleep, stopped being able to drive or socialize, reacted to everything in the environment, was in agonizing pain, and thought only of ending my life to escape the torture. When I found Medical Medium in 2017, it was the answer to my desperate pleas for help. Everything in my being resonated with the information to heal my body naturally. It was my last hope and I put all the energy I had left into trying one last time.

What books, shows, podcasts, etc...were/are helpful for you?

My life changed when I read the book "Medical Medium" by Anthony William. I literally felt like the entire book was written for me, explaining the true cause behind every diagnosis and symptom I had accumulated, especially the Lyme disease chapter. Since then, I've read his subsequent 3 books (all incredible), have listened to every single Medical Medium radio show/podcast and Facebook live, and have completed the Healing Path self-guided course on the Medical Medium website. It's all been so incredibly helpful and eye-opening to finally understand my past and how I became ill, to know there is a real reason behind the illness, and to dispel all the misinformation I received; chronic illness wasn't my fault, I didn't create it, it's not genetic, and my body was never attacking itself! Most of all, I have so much hope that I had completely lost in the past.
Additionally, I have three books on my bookshelf that I re-read again and again, always finding another bit of wisdom to help me on my life's journey: "You Can Heal Your Life" by Louise Hay, "What I Know For Sure" by Oprah Winfrey, and "I Like Myself" by Karen Beaumont.

Who has been instrumental in your journey to health?

I am so grateful for the love and support of my husband. I became ill less than a year into our marriage (married 12 years now). He has been by my side through all the ups and downs, we've learned and grown together and have deepened our relationship. Additionally, the love and support of my sister and three brothers has been indispensable. Also instrumental in helping me to heal, have been the two physical therapists that I've worked with for over 9 years. They have both witnessed my extreme struggles and did everything they could to keep me walking, to keep me moving. It is truly a joy for them to witness my profound healing transformation. I am immensely grateful for the healing help from two health coaches I've worked with: Kimberly Spair of Reclaimers of Heath, and Mirabai Cardullo. I wouldn't be nearly as far along now without their compassionate advice and resources. And it goes without saying that Anthony William has given me the hope, faith and truth that I've long sought, and the roadmap to healing and moving forward with my life.

What are some of your favorite healing foods or recipes?

My favorite healing foods are: celery juice, bananas, all berries- especially wild blueberries, raspberries and blackberries, spinach, radishes, oranges, scallions, cucumbers, cilantro, parsley, sprouts, raw honey, and all potatoes.

I love all the Medical Medium recipes- there's so much variety, and I never get bored. I drink the Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie and the Turmeric-Ginger Shot nearly every morning. I also really enjoy the recipes from the free recipes on her website, and her e-books "Potatoes" and "Sweet Potatoes." I prepare many of my dinners using the guidance of recipes, however I often eat self-created "potato bowls" where I just mix together steamed potatoes, a simple sauce, and lots of fresh vegetables and herbs.

Tell us about some of your setbacks, and how you overcame them.

When I began following Medical Medium, I was far too aggressive. I vastly underestimated the power of healing foods and supplements. I also had no idea what detoxification entailed. I virtually changed my diet overnight, took too many supplements and at doses much too high. I was launched into a 7 month-long healing crisis. I thought I was dying and got so much worse, which brought about tremendous stress and fear, especially when I thought I was supposed to be healing. It was awful!

I learned very quickly that my body was much more sensitive than I had acknowledged, and that I was much sicker than I had wanted to believe. I learned the hard way again and again to back off, go slower, and that I didn't have to do everything at once. I also really struggled with even believing that I could heal. I still felt trapped in the "getting worse" mentality and medical PTSD that I had ingrained for a decade. I began to reach out to others and ask for help. I slowly began to listen to my body and practice a "less is more" attitude, with a focus on healing foods first, then supplements at low doses.

As I gradually saw healing changes, I finally began to trust my body and trust the process. I stopped looking at the big picture and began just focusing on one day at a time, and began conversing with myself in a gentle manner, and letting go of my own self-imposed unrealistic expectations. In my darkest moments, I repeated over and over Anthony William's mantra: "All storms pass. Everything changes. Nothing ever stays the same."

What is one technique, therapy, or product that made a big difference for you?

Celery juice has been pivotal in my healing. I was so sensitive to everything when I first started Medical Medium, that I waited 2 months to even start it, then could only tolerate 2oz, 2 times a week. It took me 6 months to work up to 16oz per day, and I've gradually increased the amount since. Overall, cutting out the NO foods and adopting a whole-food plant-based lifestyle has been truly transformational. Our bodies are amazing self-healing entities, when we give them the proper nutrients and inputs that they have been yearning for all along! I have so much more clarity, energy, and love how plants are nourishing and healing every part of my body. Overdosing on nutrition yields only beneficial side effects!

How important is mindfulness and/or spirituality for healing? What does that look like for you?

This is definitely an area with opportunity for me to learn and grow as time goes on. I feel most connected and centered when I am in nature, whether on a hike in the woods, sitting on a bench by the creek, or simply listening to the birds chirp while working in my garden in the backyard. I feel most alive through movement, and am so grateful that I am getting stronger and getting back to hiking and light exercise. Everyday, I talk to the Angels and do some of the meditations that Anthony talks about in his books.

What does your life look like right now in terms of your health?

I feel so much better than I did 2 years ago. I was so sick and my body was so depleted. I have been healing, very slowly, baby steps. Many things have gotten better so I can function now, but I know I still have a bit to go. I expect that complete healing will take several years, especially given the accumulation of years of pathogens, toxins, toxic heavy metals, medical PTSD, and past traumas. Yet I am witnessing my body and my spirit come alive and I have hope that I never had in the past. Every single symptom is getting better. Some are nearly completely gone, like nearly all the POTS symptoms, brain fog, frozen shoulder, sciatica, and depression. The left side of my body is getting so much stronger and is now functional and nearly pain-free. I am back to my normal weight, I can stand, walk, clean the house, prepare meals, drive, do light exercise, and do all the daily activities that were so limited in the past. My brain is healing, my memory has come back. On an emotional and energetic level, I feel much more calm, centered, and balanced. I am gradually releasing the burden of pain, anger, frustration, resentment, and so many negative emotions that I harbored for so long. Some symptoms like insomnia and gut issues are more stubborn and will take a bit more time. Overall, I am so overjoyed with my progress, it's all getting better, I'm getting my life back!

What is one piece of advice you'd like to share with those beginning their healing journeys?

Don't try to do everything at once! It's okay to take the journey slow and steady, and to make changes over time. Consistency and repetition are what build positive habits and produce results. It's okay to back off a bit if detox is too intense and adjust things along the way. Constantly pushing too much creates resistance in the body and it backfires!
Also, don't compare yourself to anyone else. It's easy to get caught up in what someone else is doing, especially on social media, but everyone has to go through ups and downs to get to where they are. If you fall off the wagon for one meal or one day, don't stress, one day is not going to undo your overall progress. Just learn from it, embrace being human and make a conscious choice to do better. Invest in yourself, have faith in your journey, love your body, honor yourself where you are and how far you've come, see your future self where you want to be and make choices each day to realize your dreams and intentions.

Any other words of wisdom?

"Things won are done. Life's joy lies in the doing." ~William Shakespeare

This quote always reminds me to let go of the past and focus on what is within control in the present. The present moment is the only moment we ever have. Every moment adds up and creates momentum. Focus on each step in the present moment and before you know it, the big stuff in the future will magically unfold.
