I have to admit, like many of you (probably), I absolutely couldn’t live without my smartphone. Although I try to limit the amount of screen time I get each day, there’s no denying that I’m on it A LOT. Between social media, meditation apps, email, and entertainment apps, I spend quite a bit of time with my iPhone. While electronics have been somewhat maligned by the health community, we need to acknowledge just how important these little devices have become in our modern world.
Especially for those of us who are introverts, or struggle with health issues, having a constant companion and link to the outside world is SO nice.
The smartphone has become much more than simply a device we use to keep our everyday life in order and up-to-date. Smartphones have so many uses that can aid and help make our lives easier that they are becoming less a phone and more a virtual assistant.
Smartphones Help You Get Healthy and Fit
Where once, if you wanted to get advice on working out and exercising you would have to consult and pay for a professional, now you can have your own virtual trainer in your pocket. While there’s nothing that can truly replace in-person advice from a trainer or coach, having health/fitness info at your fingertips, any time of the day or night, is really remarkable!
Fitness apps not only provide information they have also changed how we record our progress. Take for instance what the sports app Endomondo can do for you. The New York Times notes that the app documents your fitness performance over a period of time. Another key feature of the app is that it can also help you invite social media friends to join in on the fun. With just a few taps on your smartphone, your fitness goals and friends can be effortlessly integrated into one app.
There are dozens of great fitness apps out there, and the ability to stream yoga classes, play workout-inspired games, and track your personal progress. Many people, myself included, love being able to see our wellness stats and get in shape from anywhere.

How we entertain ourselves has been hugely changed by smartphones. Streaming services and mobile gaming have allowed users to use their phones as entertainment hubs that can be accessed 24/7. Statista reports that the revenue from streaming content is projected to hit up to 10.9 billion USD in 2017. It comes as no surprise because in the United States alone, Netflix—one of the industry’s game-changers—has secured up to 47 million subscribers in 2016. Netflix is a prime example of how people now choose to have films, documentaries, and TV series at their fingertips (and who doesn’t love some Netflix?).
On the other hand, as the online gaming industry continues to grow, it seems that mobile gaming is headed towards becoming a habit for most consumers because of its convenience. eMarketer states that by 2020, more than half of the U.S. population will play games via their smartphones at least once a month. In 2016, Game developers Gaming Realms released information about the public’s media consumption through their various platforms. Their revenues now rely on nearly 80% of users accessing their services via mobile. In fact, their premiere entertainment, gaming platform Slingo which specializes in slot titles permits players around the world to experience mobile-friendly versions of games typically found in high-end, world-class hotels or even along the globally renowned Las Vegas Strip. More and more, online gaming companies are bridging the gap to bring online entertainment experiences to the doorstep of its consumers. This, now more than ever, is via mobile.

Smartphones can help you manage your stressful lifestyle through meditation apps and other mindfulness features. You know I am a huge fan of meditation, and have talked about it in several other blogs. Personally, I meditate every single day, and always with a guided session from one of my fave apps (I have several that I love!).
Meditation has many health benefits that include better concentration, improved communication, and a calmer mind. It can even awaken your inner creativity and optimism, which we could all use, right? When it comes to mental and emotional health, I believe that the more tools we have at our fingertips, the better. And if that means packing your smartphone with relaxing apps and games, or ways to track your moods (or gratitude journals!), then I’m all for it!
