5 Cannabinoids You Should Know

hands holding cannabis plant

Hello dear friends!

If you’ve been following me on social media for a while, you’ll know that I’m a big fan of cannabis medicine. I’ve personally been using THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids to help me with things like anxiety, insomnia, and chronic pain for many years. (I acknowledge that I’ve been lucky/privileged to be able to do so, as a white person living in Colorado) And these days, I’ve been so excited to play with a few other isolated cannabinoids that are showing great promise for human health.

When most people hear about cannabis medicine, they tend to either think of smoking a joint, or taking CBD oil. And while these are both great ways to use this plant, there is so much more to it! The cannabis plant contains over 100+ bioactive compounds called cannabinoids, which work on the endocannabinoid system of the body. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a network of neurotransmitters and proteins that affect both the central and peripheral nervous systems. I won’t go into the entire ECS, but I will say that it has far-reaching effects on things like appetite, fertility, mood, memory, pain sensation, and more.

We’ve all seen the popularity of CBD oil grow in the past few years, and for good reason. This is an abundant cannabinoid, and probably the most well-researched. However, it’s not the only cannabinoid to know, especially if you are looking for relief from certain health issues. There are several other incredible compounds that can take your well-being to the next level.

Here are my top 5 cannabinoids that you should know:

1. CBD (cannabidiol)

Completely non-psychoactive and legal in all 50 states, cannabidiol or CBD, is a popular remedy for all sorts of ailments. It’s been shown to reduce pain, reduce anxiety and depression, reduce seizure activity, and help with drug withdrawal symptoms. It also is showing positive effects with slowing tumor growth and protecting neural cells from oxidative damage.

2. CBN (cannabinol)

Cannabinol, or CBN, is created when THC ages (if you were to leave your cannabis lying around for a while, it would have higher levels of CBN). Many people like doing this, because CBN is non-intoxicating while offering great benefits for insomnia and pain. It’s known for being more sedating than other cannabinoids, but it’s also showing effects for neuroprotection and appetite regulation, in addition to knocking out pain.

3. CBC (cannabichromene)

CBC is a fascinating cannabinoid, that’s currently being researched for a few things: altering pain perception, growing new brain cells, and reducing cancer growth. Like other cannabinoids, CBC also shows great effects with reducing overall inflammation and boosting mood. It also appears to have antimicrobial effects.

4. CBG (cannabigerol)

Cannabigerol, or CBG, is sometimes known as the “mother cannabinoid” because it’s a precursor for many of the other compounds in the cannabis plant. It has more of an uplifting effect, and is great for boosting your focus and motivation. Also a potent anti-inflammatory, CBG works to boost anandamide, a molecule associated with enhancing pleasure and energy while reducing pain.

5. Delta-8 THC

Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol is similar to the main player that we all know of (technically delta-9 THC), but with much less buzzy effects. Delta-8 THC can offer similar relief from pain and nausea, without the agitation or paranoia typically associated with cannabis. It does have some psychoactive effects (but is still legal) but offers a more balanced experience with wider health benefits.

If you want to try out these isolated cannabinoids, make sure you find a reputable company that provides full-spectrum products that are made from organic cannabis and are 3rd-party tested for things like pesticides and heavy metals. Trust me, there are a LOT of shady cannabinoid products on the market now.
