5 Essential Skills Every Healer Needs

crystals and rituals for healers

Hello dear friends!

It was about 5 years ago, in one of my first ever Reiki healing sessions, when things didn’t go as planned. I had been taught the very basic Reiki healing techniques, placing hands in certain areas of the body, directing energy, without much dialogue. Easy, simple, cut and dried, to the point. But on this day, I realized that healing went far beyond this basic formula, and that there was so much more for me to learn. I was working on my client’s heart area, when I felt the presence of a spirit guide and heard a clear message that was directed for my client.

I immediately felt out of my depth, but managed to kind of stutter out what I had heard. I could see tears start rolling down her cheeks, and soon it became a flowing stream of release. I felt myself bracing against the inflow of messages from this spirit guide, unsure of how to translate, quickly getting overwhelmed. While, in the end, this session proved to be transformative for my client, I felt a bit shaken by the whole thing.

I couldn’t stop thinking about what happened, and it kept me up for a few nights after. I started noticing a wary feeling in my stomach, before new client sessions, unsure of what to expect now. It was a strange time in my budding Reiki practice, to say the least! And it wasn’t until I learned these 5 essential practices, that I was able to approach healing sessions with calm and confidence.

While every healer has their own unique gifts, talents, and training, we all have things in common. We want to serve and make a positive difference in people’s lives. We also want to feel supported and safe in our work.

So, whether you are currently working in the healing arts, or you’re hoping to in the future, there are a few things that you need to practice, in order to be successful over the long term.

These are things I’ve had to learn the hard way, or had to research for myself. But I’m passionate about supporting this community of lightworkers, healers, doctors, therapists, and other practitioners, and that’s why I created an entire bonus module just for you in my Energy Mastery online course! And of course, why I’m sharing this post with you today. So, let’s dive right in.

My top 5 skills for healers

1. Pre- and post-session rituals

Don’t make the mistake of going into your sessions unprepared, or simply going about your day after they’re done. Trust me, it doesn’t serve your energy! It’s essential to take a few minutes to get clear and centered beforehand, so you can leave your own stuff at the door and show up fully (see #3). And just as important, if not more so, after a session to do your grounding and releasing! There are many different tools for this, like meditation, earthing, smudging, prayer, certain foods, herbal tea, pulling cards, essential oils, music, and lots more.

2. Tools for emotional processing

There will undoubtedly be sessions when you touch on some dark, difficult, or traumatic energies and experiences. And it’s vital that you have tools to process this stuff for yourself. During the session, you’re holding space for the client to release or process it, but it can stick with you afterward! Whether you prefer journaling, dancing it out, talk therapy with a counselor, or something else, make sure you have ways to let go of other people’s pain.

3. Ability to be a clear channel

This is especially important for any of us who do energetic or spiritual healing, or mediumship/intuitive work, but any health or wellness practitioner can benefit. Being a clear channel is all about setting aside your own stuff, and being open to the flow of Divine guidance. Practice putting away distractions, reinforcing your energetic bubble, and dropping into a calm and flexible mindset. I’ve found that pre-session meditation is really helpful with this.

4. Connection with your spirit team

None of us are here alone, and we’re especially not meant to do our healing work alone! It’s so nice to feel that you are supported, guided, and protected by your “team of light,” both during sessions and throughout your days. This is an ongoing thing, but now’s the time to start investing in building a relationship with your team. All of us have a mix of angels, ancestral guides, animal spirits, past loved ones, and other spirits that want to assist us here on Earth School. Your practice will be much more profound with their help!

5. Allowing yourself to receive

One thing that I see in so many healing practitioners is the selfless caregiver archetype. The pattern of putting everyone ahead of yourself, and feeling guilty about accepting or receiving. This is a fast track to burnout and resentment, my friends! Start getting in the habit of receiving with joy and gratitude! Whether it’s a meal, a gift, a compliment, any form of pleasure, or especially receiving healing from other practitioners. Do your own inner work to understand that you are worthy to receive, just like you give to your clients/patients/friends/family.

I go into much more detail on these five essential skills, and give lots of tips and practices that you can work with, in my Energy Mastery online course. This course is designed for anyone who identifies as an empath, intuitive, HSP, or a sensitive soul, and is especially useful for healing practitioners of all kinds!
